Topanga Canyon Gallery presents an exhibition of new work by Los Angeles-based Canadian artist Lisa Baldwin. Wild Places is a series of recent works that celebrate the ephemeral character of California wildflowers. This oeuvre is also a metaphor for the delicacy of the natural world and the looming concerns of human induced climate change threatening it. These works are conceptually simple, yet intensely complex in their detail. They invite the viewer to hold out their hand and touch the tips of the flowers and grasses as they walk by. On view throughout the gallery space, the artist shares paintings in large and medium scale. Lisa Baldwin relocated to West Hollywood from south eastern Quebec just under five years ago, as a director of her family’s land preservation company she was immediately struck by the abundance of protected lands throughout Los Angeles county, and has spent her time exploring, painting, and photographing the still wild places she has found. Baldwin is influenced by Tom Thomson and the Canadian Group of seven who travelled to remote locations painting en plein air and believed that a distinct Canadian art could be developed through direct contact with nature. Her latest works capture the essential character of this wild subject in its most distilled form. These thematically calming paintings are marked with feverish, highly animated brushstrokes that distinguish these gestural works as unique to her. Baldwin’s intention as an artist is to filter reality through her senses and convey that moment of consciousness onto her canvas. She believes the inclusion of movement is a critical element of human perception. In this series the she suggests a subtle breeze blowing through a field of wildflowers. As a whole, her work celebrates the unapologetic beauty of the natural world and strives to remind her audience of how essential it is to both our current existence and for the future of humanity. Lisa Baldwin lives and works in West Hollywood and spends the late summer and early autumn months in her native village of Baldwin’s Mills Quebec. Her work is represented in private collections across Canada, the United States, Belgium, Hungary, United Kingdom, and China.
